The Department of General Physiology and Immunology is a modern academic and research unit dedicated to the study of fundamental and applied aspects of physiological and immunological processes under both normal and pathophysiological conditions. Its teaching and research activities are focused on an integrative understanding of the function of cells, tissues, and organ systems, with particular emphasis on the cardiovascular system, metabolism, aging, and immune mechanisms.
The Department’s research encompasses the analysis of complex interactions between oxidative and reductive stress, chronic inflammation, and cellular signaling, as well as their role in the development of cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncological diseases. Special attention is given to mechanisms of mechanotransduction, the function of ion channels, and the regulation of cellular excitability, particularly in cardiomyocytes and vascular smooth muscle cells. In addition, the effects of biologically active molecules, pharmacological agents, and natural compounds (such as antioxidants and polyphenols) on cellular function and systemic homeostasis are investigated.
Within the Department, active research is conducted on metabolic disorders, diabetes, and aging, as well as their relationship with inflammatory processes and redox signaling. Contemporary approaches in molecular biomedicine are also applied, including gene expression analysis, signaling pathways, and translational biomedical research.
The Department participates in numerous national and international research projects covering topics such as ion channel regulation, mechanosensitive mechanisms in cardiac cells, the role of nitric oxide in cellular signaling, and the effects of hyper- and microgravity on the cardiovascular system. Through these activities, extensive international collaboration is established and researcher mobility is promoted.
