Slavica Tofilovska Kamishevska is a teaching assistant and PhD candidate in Biology (Ecology) at the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University Saints Cyril and Methodius, Skopje, North Macedonia. Her work at the Mycological Laboratory includes participation in research projects involving collection and morphological identification of fungi, fungarium work, molecular phylogenetics, biodiversity analyses and conservation of fungi. She was engaged in the preparation of Red List of Fungi in North Macedonia serving as principle assessor of 21 of the 64 species assessed. Her master thesis focused on Diversity and Ecology of Hypogeous Fungi in North Macedonia, documenting 66 taxa, 40 of which newly recorded in the Country, based on morphological identification of ca. 900 collections. Through the curriculum at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, the completion of training courses at the Slovenian Forestry Institute in Ljubljana (2018, 2019, 2023), as well as short research stays at the Department of Life, Health and Environmental Science, University of L'Aquila, Italy (2023) and at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research, University of Vienna (2025), within the frame of ERASMUS or joint scientific projects, she has become acquainted with molecular protocols such as DNA extraction and amplification, as well as bioinformatics applied to fungal species identification and phylogenetics using programs such as Lasergene, BioEdit, MEGA, MAFFT, PAUP4, raxMLGui, FigTree and iTol.In the frame of her PhD work so far, additional collections of hypogeous fungi and ITS rDNA sequences of 450 collections from North Macedonia have been obtained. Phylogenetic analyses of rare hypogeous species and species complexes aim to uncover cryptic species and help resolve taxonomic and cladistic questions, as well as to advance general knowledge of the biogeographic processes in this area.
