Assistant Professor Dr. Jelena Hinić was born on April 20, 1994, in Skopje, where she completed her primary and secondary education. She enrolled in her undergraduate studies in the academic year 2012/2013 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, majoring in Molecular Biology. She graduated as the top student in her generation, earning the professional title of Bachelor of Molecular Biology. In the academic year 2016/2017, she enrolled in second-cycle (Master’s) studies at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, in the study program Ecology and Taxonomy. After completing all program requirements (60 ECTS) with a GPA of 10.00, she defended her Master’s thesis on June 24, 2020, and obtained the title Master of Biology (Ecology).
In November 2020, she enrolled in third-cycle (doctoral) studies at the Institute of Biology, in the study program Ecology. On November 18, 2025, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Valentina Slavevska-Stamenković, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation titled “Diversity, Taxonomy, Distribution and DNA Barcoding of Caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera) from the Aquatic Ecosystems of the Sharr Mountains”, completing her doctoral studies with a GPA of 10.00.
Since December 2020, Jelena has been employed at the Institute of Biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics as a teaching assistant in the scientific fields of Zoology, Biosystematics, Ecology and Environment, Evolution, and Entomology.
During her undergraduate studies, starting from the academic year 2015/2016 to the present, Jelena has been actively involved in conducting practical classes at the Institute of Biology within the Department of Systematics and Phylogeny of Invertebrates. She has contributed to courses such as Invertebrates (for Ecology and Environmental Science students), Fundamentals of Ecology and Evolution (evolution part, for Molecular Biology and Genetics students), Forensic Entomology (for Biochemistry and Physiology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics students), Zoology (for Nutrition students), Zoology of Aquatic Invertebrates (for Ecology and Environmental Science students), Aquatic Insects (for Biology students), and Macroinvertebrates and Their Application in Monitoring Studies (for Biology and Ecology and Environmental Science students), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Valentina Slavevska-Stamenković. Since 2015, she has also been involved in the research activities of the Department, actively participating in scientific projects in the fields of faunal diversity and hydrobiology together with her mentor.
As a teaching assistant at the Institute of Biology, Jelena has also contributed to practical teaching in other departments. As a volunteer during the academic years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, she participated in practical classes in Human Anatomy at the Department of Comparative Anatomy. At the same department, in the academic years 2019/2020 through 2023/2024, she conducted practical classes in Animal Typology 2 and Animal Diversity. Additionally, in the academic year 2022/2023, she conducted practical classes in Vertebrates for the Biology and Ecology and Environmental Science programs at the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Biogeography and Valorization of Natural Ecosystems.
Furthermore, Jelena Hinić is a member of the Research Society of Biology Students (IDSB) and the Serbian Entomological Society (Entomološko društvo Srbije – EDS). Between 2016 and 2020, she was actively involved in the activities of the Macedonian Biological Society, contributing to the organization of biology competitions for primary and secondary school students. Since 2020, she has been involved in preparing students for the International Biology Olympiad. Since 2024, she has been a member of the Young Water Professionals Committee within the Association of Public Utility Service Providers of the Republic of North Macedonia (ADKOM).
For the purposes of her Master’s thesis and specialization in the application of classical and modern molecular-biological methods and techniques for taxonomic identification of aquatic insects, Jelena completed four research stays abroad. In March 2017 and January 2018, she stayed at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Croatia, in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Mladen Kučinić. As a recipient of a CEEPUS scholarship, she completed a one-month research stay (May–June 2018) at the Faculty of Science, University of Pristina, Kosovo, in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Halil Ibrahimi. The molecular analyses for her Master’s thesis were conducted at the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology under Prof. Dr. Michał Grabowski at the University of Łódź, Poland, where she stayed from January 14 to February 14, 2019. She continued her international research training during her doctoral studies with a research stay in May 2023 at the Faculty of Science, University of Pristina, again in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Halil Ibrahimi.
In addition to these research stays, Jelena has worked on expanding the scientific focus of the Department of Systematics and Phylogeny of Invertebrates. In June 2018, she attended the seminar “Management Committee (MC4) meeting and co-located Working Group (WG) meetings” at the University of Pécs Research Center in Hungary. In October 2018, she participated in a training course on the application of DNA-based techniques in biomonitoring of freshwater ecosystems in Bucharest, Romania. Later, from February 15–19, 2021, she participated in the training school ForBio Course – DNA barcoding: from sequences to species. These three events were organized within the COST Action CA15219 “Developing new genetic tools for bioassessment of aquatic ecosystems in Europe.” She is also a member of COST Action CA18239 “Conservation of freshwater mussels: a pan-European approach,” where she directly contributes to the development of international conservation strategies for freshwater mussels, including the species Unio crassus. Within this action, she participated in a short-term scientific mission in Laufen, Germany, in January 2023.
To date, Jelena Hinić has been involved in 56 scientific projects, participated in or organized 19 workshops both nationally and internationally, and is the author or co-author of 21 scientific papers and 45 conference presentations (17 oral and 28 poster presentations) presented at national and international scientific events.
