The main objective of the Drin MoU is the attainment of the Shared Vision: “Promote joint action for the coordinated integrated management of the shared water resources in the Drin Basin, as a means to safeguard and restore, to the extent possible, the ecosystems and the services they provide, and to promote sustainable development across the Drin Basin”.
  2. The ultimate goal of the work in the Drin Basin is to reach a point in the future where the scale of management lifts from single water bodies to the hydrological interconnected system of the Drin Basin, eventually leading from the sharing of waters among Riparians and conflicting uses, to the sharing of benefits among stakeholders.

Objectives and expected scientific impact

To achieve the main objective described in this MoU, the following specific objectives were accomplished:

  1. Synthesise current knowledge to characterise the status of riparian vegetation, their main stressors andmanagement responses across Europe.
  2. Convey and share riparian knowledge among scientists, policy makers and stakeholders from differentscientific disciplines, geographical regions and management contexts to understand how riparianvegetation is framed by different communities and thereby facilitate effective knowledge conversion.
  3. Identify misalignments among actors in how to understand and conceptualize riparian vegetation in order to prioritise areas for knowledge conversion efforts as well as research gaps and policy/strategy improvements.
  4. Determine evidence-based best practices in riparian management and develop effective tools and indicators to assess ecological status using riparian vegetation. Tools and indicators shall be crafted drawing from different disciplines and conveyed to practitioners in order to fulfil relevant policy targets.

“Land Degradation Neutrality”

As a result of the current negative trends in land degradation, our communities and ecosystems are less able to ensure food and water security, generate livable incomes, and cope with the impacts of climate change. Many livelihoods in the developing world are closely linked to the productivity of the land, which in turn defines its capacity for climate mitigation and adaptation. It is recognize the need for immediate climate action which means that sustainable land management and restoration must be front and center on both of the global agendas.”

SFI method lies in the ability of obtaining a synthetic value of lake shorezone functionality. The SFI approach permits to complete the study of the internal lake’s dynamics, often modified for production or recreational-tourism purposes. A lake’ shorezone management based on the concepts of its functionality allows to reconcile the environment protection with the human use of the lake, helping an eco-sustainable city planning and watershed management. Lake managers and stakeholders can use these results for a sustainable ecosystem-based watershed management.

“Integrated Water Resources Management at Dojran Lake”  Macedonia

The “Integrated Water Resources Management at Dojran Lake” project proposes to strengthen links between the international research community and local policy-makers to enhance the resilience of the system through promotion of sustainable agricultural and fishery practices and related governance and institutional systems. By analysing and understanding the biophysical (availability of water, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems), socio-economic (demography, land-use) and institutional (agricultural and environmental policies, governance systems, stakeholders roles) dimensions of integrated water resource management, we would identify innovative practices and tools for efficient use of water resources (agriculture and fishery) and the conservation and valorisation of biodiversity.

“Comparison of secondary shrub vegetation in continental and Mediterranean parts of the Balcan Peninsula.” (bilateral project between Macedonia and Slovenija, Ministry of Science and technology of Slovenia, Ministry of Science of Macedonia)

The project was tested two areas. The first was situated in the area under the Mediterranean influence with evergreen vegetation classified within the order Pistatio lentisci-Rhamnetalia alaterni and the order Quercetalia ilicis. Tradicionally it is termed macchia (Nord Greece). The second testing area was situated in the central part of the Balkans under influence of the continental climate (Republic of Macedonia). The vegetation is deciduous here, classified with the classis Quercetae pubescentis. Tradicionally it is termed sibljak.

The project was realized in Macedonia and northern Greece, according to the methodology of Braun-Blanquet (1964).

In the coastal region in schrub communities there appear more evergreen plants species than in the continental one, since they gradually disappear towards the continent. At the same time also plant traits change are correlate with a local climate. Also, the syntaxonomical scheme of vegetation was revised.

“Floral and vegetation caracteristics in the macquia and pseudomacquia zone in the differant parts of Balkan Peninsula” (bilateral project between Macedonia and Slovenija, Ministry of Science and technology of Slovenia, Ministry of Science of Macedonia)

This type of investigated vegetation appear in the Mediterranean and Submediteranean region.

Tasks were:

  • to sample the vegetation and to classify it within the syntaxonomic sistem
  • to determine their horizontal and vertical distribution of the macquia and pseudomacquia vegetation
  • all recorded data to be supported with details of their environmental characteristics, climatic conditions, hydrological conditions, anthropogenic influence, etc.
  • • to determine the plant-geographical relations and to do analysis for the participation of individual floral elements in each of the plant communities

“Annual plant species in dry grasslands in the transitional area between Eurosibirian-Northamerican and Mediterranean regions" (bilateral project between Macedonia and Slovenija, Ministry of Science and technology of Slovenia, Ministry of Science of Macedonia).

The project was focused on the investigation of vegetation in the transitional area between two phytogeographical regions, the Eurosiberian-Northamerican and Mediterranean regions. From the European perspective,  this investigation is important for two reasons:

  • The grasslands are endangered habitats and therefore, they need to be studied and evaluated so that the right measures for their protection can be taken
  • These grasslands have not been studied yet. The study will consist of the description of vegetation types, floristic composition (special attention paid to rare and endangered species) and the data in a broader European scale. At the same time, other aspects of the biodiversity will be studied such as functional and structural ones.

The project has several ones:

  • Sampling and analysis of grasslands in the region
  • Analysis of flora with special attention to rare and endangered species
  • Analysis of vegetation tupes and detection of the change in life history traits along the gradient from the Mediterranean to the continent

"Vegetation of dry grasslands in the southern part of Macedonia",  (bilateral project between Macedonia and Slovenija, Ministry of Science and technology of Slovenia, Ministry of Science of Macedonia).

The project was realized in Macedonia, southwestern Bulgaria, northern Greece, according to the methodology of Braun-Blanquet (1964). This project had several objectives:

  • researches some plant communities on the grasslands on silicate geological bedrock in southern Macedonia
  • comparing the surveyed communities, their differentiation and identification of their distribution in the wider area - southwestern Bulgaria (Pirin Macedonia) and Northern Greece (Aegean Macedonia)
  • determining their affiliation to higher sintaksonomski categories.

Vegetation of the highland pastures of the Pletvar,-Kozjak and Sivec and their genetic found.

During the three-year survey of grassland vegetation on mountains Pletvar, Sivec and Kozjak was registered the presence of already known plant communities and also been described new plant communities of the classes Festuco-Brometea and Helianthemetea guttati.

Tasks were:

  • •to determine the total number of communities - associations and lower syntaxons
  • to determine synmorphology (structure and floristic composition) of the communities
  • to determine their affiliation to higher syntaxonomical categories - alliance, order and class
  • to compare with existing literature data concerning the presence of vegetation communities of this type from other parts of the territory of the Republic of Macedonia
  • to determine their horizontal and vertical distribution
  • possibly newly communities to be processed and described in accordance with the rules and principles of the International Code of of phytosociological nomenclature
  • all recorded data to be supported with details of their environmental characteristics, climatic conditions, hydrological conditions, anthropogenic influence, etc.
  • to determine the biological spectrum of the association by analyzing the percentage representation of individual life forms in which registered taxa occurs
  • to determine the plant-geographical relations and to do analysis for the participation of individual floral elements in each of the plant communities
